  • Particular academic focus on 20th-century European history

    • Highest examination performance in specialist paper ‘Culture, Politics and Identity in Cold War Europe, 1945–68’.

    • Final year dissertation explored civilian experiences of WWII raids on Cologne, titled: “Ich möch zo Foß no Kölle jon”: The Peter and Paul Angriff as it was experienced by the people of Cologne.

Teaching experience

Calm, thoughtful and adaptable, Sophie is a bilingual German-English speaker and Oxford graduate in History and Politics. She believes patience and encouragement are key to building students’ confidence as well as their academic skills and examination results.

Sophie’s language skills enable her to provide authentic speaking practice and targeted support in German for students at all levels. She began private tuition at St Mary’s, mentoring younger pupils in German, Maths, English, and History. She has tutored since and prepared several students for public examinations and guided them through university admissions processes. She has a particular aptitude for personal statement tuition and preparation for the Oxford History Aptitude Test.

She particularly enjoys working with international students - especially those from Germany - who are considering applications to British universities.

Extra-curricular interests

Outside of her academic work, Sophie is a keen swimmer and loves to travel. She enjoys visiting theatres, galleries, and museums, especially in London and Germany. Ever curious to explore new cultural scenes wherever she goes, she loves discovering and exploring different food and traditions and she has a particular interest in European history and politics. When not travelling or at the theatre, she can often be found with an excellent novel or planning her next trip.
