Teaching Experience
Esther is a tutor with years of experience, beginning tutoring IB subjects Theory of Knowledge and Higher Level English Literature part-time in 2021 upon starting her undergraduate degree. She has since accrued over 200 hours of tutoring experience and many more subjects, including Mandarin language for all abilities, Latin language to A-level, and Oxbridge admissions preparation.
She provides guided one-on-one essay feedback on formative classroom work, mock written and oral examination practice, and works with her students to create their own personalised revision and learning plans. Where possible, she emphasises thorough understanding over simple rote-learning and regurgitation. In terms of language teaching, having learned Latin from scratch herself at university, she is fully acquainted with the challenges of language acquisition on the full spectrum of abilities. She formats her language lessons to achieve the individual goals and needs of the student, whether that is simple conversational fluency—no reading of abstruse philosophical scholarship required—or success in standardised school language exams.
Esther’s general teaching approach is that of exercising flexibility and patience. She communicates with her students to tailor her lesson plans around their individual needs and goals, as well as to subject-specific areas of focus as stipulated by the syllabus of the examination board. She strives to create a comfortable and open atmosphere during lessons and beyond, where students are unafraid to challenge themselves and make mistakes, by empowering her students with confidence in their own abilities to learn and succeed.
As best put by her own Latin tutor at university, “in errando discimus!” (by making mistakes, we learn!”).
